The Atari Punk Console
A few years ago I came across this Collin's Lab video, where he showcased a very simple circuit that was able to recreate the distinctive 8 bit sound from the old video games.
The schematic is quite simple, using just 2x 555 Timers or one single 556 double timer and a bunch of passive components for timing purpouse:
